The glass tradition of the Barbini family can be traced back to a note in a sixteenth-century book in which wealthy families and glass masters were mentioned. The family played an important role in the development of glass art and as an advisor to other glass masters. Alfredo Barbini was born in 1912 on the island of Murano and began his career as an apprentice at the Ferro Toso factory. Seventeen years later, he became a master glassblower at Cristalleria di Venezia e Murano. Later he designed impressive objects at Zecchin & Martinuzzi. After the factory closed, he started working for Seguso Vetri d'Arte, with whom he worked independently after the Second World War. Barbini also collaborated with Luigi Scarpa Croce and Salviati. In 1946 he was artistic director at Gino Cenedese & C, where he developed techniques such as vetro fumato and corroso style.
In 1950 Barbini started his own company. His oeuvre was supplemented with objects with more minimalist forms. He perfected the Massello technique, in which hot glass is stretched into a shape without having to blow the glass, the Sommerso technique, in which thick layers of colored glass connect seamlessly, and the Corrosione technique, in which glass gets a corroded appearance. Alfredo Barbini passed away in 2007.
