Abramine Willy Schreuder (1922-2012) - Winter landscape with a Drenthe farm

Will Schreuder was born on 23 June 1922 in Groningen. After high school she went to the Academie Minerva in Groningen, where she was taught by AW Kort, CP de Wit and W. Valk. The HTS was also located in the same building of the Academie Minerva on the Petrus Driessenstraat. There she met her future husband Gerard Gazendam, son of frame maker and art dealer Jur Gazendam in Groningen.

During the war years she moved to Amsterdam. In Amsterdam she met the painter Jan Korthals, from whom she took lessons and with whom she worked there. At the end of 1944 they returned to Groningen. After the liberation Gerard Gazendam decided to work in the business with his father Jur. The art trade flourished, mainly thanks to the inspiring influence of Will Schreuder, and became a household name in Groningen and far beyond. She bought paintings, sold them again, advised on the choice of frames and restored paintings. She also organised exhibitions of, among others, team members, Frisian painters, Henk Helmantel and many others, but she also remained faithful to painting; the Groningen landscape in particular was often immortalised by her. She exhibited at home and abroad, including in the German artists' village of Worpswede.

She also participated in the cultural life in Groningen; she drew together with the team painters Altink, Dijkstra and Martens during the model evenings in Pictura. She knew the team members well and when one looks at her work, it is visible that she frequently uses the colours of the Ploeg.

Due to a progressive eye disease, she was unfortunately no longer able to paint in recent years.
