Beautiful offset printing by Obey - Shepard Fairey -
Not framed but signed and dated by the artist himself.
This beautiful offset was created through a collaboration with photographer Steve Schapiro, who documented many of the important civil rights protests of the 1960s, and Shepard Fairey.
Voting rights and racial equality were the focus of a mass movement toward a more just society in the 1960s. Unfortunately, the insidious racism that never went away gave way to more overt racism and voter suppression, often targeting people of color and students . Democracy should work for everyone. (Fairey)
Shepard Fairey
American street artist, graphic designer, activist and illustrator who emerged from the skateboarding scene.
Shepard Fairey was born {1970) and raised in Charleston, South Carolina. His father, Strait Fairey, is a physician, and his mother, Charlotte, is a real estate agent. He attended the Porter-Gaud School in Charleston and transferred to high school school at the Idyllwild Arts Academy in Idyllwild, California, from which he graduated in 1988.
Fairey became involved in art in 1984, when he began putting his drawings on skateboards and T-shirts. He moved to Rhode Island in 1988 to attend the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). In 1992, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Arts Degree in Illustration from RISD
After graduating, he started a small printing business in Providence, Rhode Island called Alternate Graphics, specializing in screen printing of T-shirts and stickers, which allowed Fairey to continue pursuing his own artwork. While living in Providence in 1994, Fairey met the American filmmaker Helen Stickler, who had also attended RISD and earned a film degree. The following spring, Stickler completed a short documentary about Shepard and his work, titled "Andre the Giant Has a Posse." The film premiered at the New York Underground Film Festival in 1995 and subsequently played at the Sundance Film Festival in 1997. It has been seen at over 70 festivals and museums internationally.
He is best known for his sticker campaign Andre the Giant Has a Posse (…OBEY…).
Fairey believes in the power of art to ignite social change and challenge the status quo. Throughout his career, Fairey has used his art to spark conversations and raise awareness around various issues.
He gained worldwide fame during the 2008 US presidential election with his Barack Obama 'Hope' poster. The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston calls him one of the most famous and influential street artists. His work is in the Smithsonian, the Museum of Modern Art Art in New York, the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and nowadays in the Street Museum in Amsterdam.
Shepard Fairey exhibited over 130 works of art at the Street Museum in Amsterdam from August through October 15, 2023. He also created two murals: one on the west exterior wall of the museum, and a large work for our permanent collection inside. Both works can still be admired in Amsterdam.
