Sam Middleton was a painter, lithographer and watercolorist. He was born in Harlem, New York and lived in Mexico, Japan, Spain and Sweden. He came to the Netherlands in early 1963. He lived in Amsterdam for a number of years, but fascinated by the landscape he later settled in Schagen in North Holland.
Middleton is self-taught, but has taught at the Ateliers '63 Haarlem and at the Royal Academy in Den Bosch. In his abstract expressionist works the influence of classical music, jazz and pop plays a role, but also the Dutch landscape,
These themes recur in Middleton's collages, in which he incorporates scores and photographs. The collages have a balanced aesthetic and rhythmic balance that is created by a subtly applied division of planes, in many cases with a transparent painted background and the addition of a great variety of graphic elements.
Sam Middleton's work can be seen in museums all over the world. In addition to the Netherlands - such as the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Museum Van Bommel van Dam - his work can also be seen in Australia and Israel.
