Roland Sohier (1950) made this work in 2001. This is a beautifully detailed etching in black and white. The theme of gnomes is often found in Sohier's work. See below what he writes about it on his website.
The work is in good condition and the passepartout is completely intact. Comes in a matching box, wrapped in tissue paper. More work can be seen at www.rolandsohier.nl. Also watch the interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZ0-DTDzljU
Taken from the artist's website:
In my work I shed light on 'the human condition'.
Starting from strictly personal ideas, emotions and considerations, I force the representation to a more general validity during the working process. Traces of this process can be found in the dirty erasing, the cut-away parts in the drawings and in the layering of the paintings. In the works men and women of flesh and blood figure, but there is also room for clowns, gnomes or giants. The use of such (fairy tale) figures gives me the opportunity to approach reality from a side door.
I use humor and a touch of irony to give the sometimes heavy theme a certain lightness. I make both very large and smaller drawings and paintings, make drawing installations and site-specific wall collages and, as in the exhibition 'Bij nijntje op zolder' I take care of the total concept. In addition, I make bronze sculptures, stained glass and wall drawings on commission.
Since blood is thicker than water, I have been painting again since 2021! With real oil paint! On linen!
