  • René Engelen was a Belgian artist who was born in 1897 in Antwerp and died in 1971 in Borgerhout. He was a painter and watercolourist. From 1912 he was a pupil at the Academy in Ghent under the direction of F. Gogo. He incorporated the influence of the marine painters A. Baertsoen, R. Baseleer, D. Van Raemdonck and especially F. Hens in a personal style. He found his inspiration exclusively in harbour life, the sea and the Scheldt. He sought to depict the change of atmosphere on the water in a lyrical way. He loved wide skies and endless horizons. He was not so much fascinated by the picturesqueness of the banks of the Scheldt, but by the tremendous grandeur of nature and the river, which he managed to capture in moving canvases. Initially he painted colourfully and in a traditional way, but then he moved to more greys. A long period of illness and inactivity led him to a more abstract, suggestive painting style with a deeper palette with striking main colours. He also painted Antwerp cityscapes more sporadically. Was secretary of the National Association of Painters and Sculptors of Belgium from 1937. In 1965 founding member of the Group of Antwerp Harbour and Scheldt Painters. Work to be in the Museum in Antwerp. Mentioned in Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists. Source: Piron.
