Nikolaas Mathijs Eekman was a figurative painter, watercolourist, woodcarver, etcher and lithographer. Studied architecture, sculpture and painting at the Academy of Brussels. In the Netherlands he was a member of Arti et Amicitiae, Sint-Lucas and De Onafhankelijken and in France of La Nationale des Beaux-Arts and Le Trait. Led his own Academy in Paris for six years. Illustrated with etchings including Uylenspiegel by C. De Coster. Lived and worked in Brussels until 1914; stayed in the Netherlands for several years. In 1921 he left for Paris, where he exhibited with numerous artists. In 1937, at the International Exhibition in Paris, Eekman received a gold medal for his painting "La Pelote bleue". He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae and Sint Lucas in Amsterdam, De Onafhankelijken and the Société des Beaux Arts "Le Trait" in Paris. Work in numerous museums, including Brussels, Amsterdam, Arnhem, The Hague, Dordrecht, Otterlo, Paris, Dresden, Munich, Moscow, Prague and Chicago.
