Martin R. Baeyens, born in 1943 in Melle, Belgium, is a versatile artist who has proven himself as a painter, draftsman and graphic artist. After his education at Sint-Lucas and the Academy in Ghent (1963-1968) he evolved from abstraction to new figuration, in which the human silhouette became central. In 1975 he introduced an innovative vision of the landscape.
Baeyens' contribution to the Suraci project in Brittany (1975) and the Maze project (1977) testifies to his innovative approach to art. His work is often praised for its chaotic, untouched representation of nature, in which he integrates geometric structures and signals, similar to aerial views of airports.
In addition to his artistic career, Baeyens was a teacher at the Academy of Ghent from 1968 and co-founder of the Hoest Arts Movement (HAM) in 1973. His work is mentioned in BAS I and in "Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists" (Piron).
