A very special and large terracotta vase (in ethnographic terms: pseudo-vessel) from the Mangbetu tribe from the former Belgian Oriental Congo. The height of the terracotta drinking vessel is 32 centimeters and it weighs no less than 3.6 kilograms. The total height, including suspension cord, is 110 centimeters. These types of ceremonial terracotta objects were used as grave/altar keepsakes of an exceptional ancestor - they were placed in the circle by the campfire at important gatherings after which the storyteller of the tribe proclaimed the important exploits of the ancestor.
