Johannes Bernardus Sleper (variant name: Jan Sleper; usually signed as JB Sleper and monogrammed as JBS 'onder elkaar') was born on 18 August 1919 in Hilversum and died on 3 January in Amsterdam. He followed artistic education at the Amsterdam School of Graphic Design and at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, also in Amsterdam. He was a pupil of Co Breman, Gerard Koekkoek and Willem van Konijnenburg. Later – as a teacher of graphic art at the Academy of Art and Design St. Joost in Breda – his pupils included Netty Dietvorst, Jan Forrer, Cor van Gulik, Corry Koekkoek, Elly Lamers, Clemens Merkelbach van Enkhuizen, Jan Michielsen, Konrad Nachenius, Harry Stallenberg and Ad Willemen. Sleper was a 'restless' artist who practiced his trade in many places (Bussum, Amsterdam, Hilversum, Laren Nh., Haarlem and Breda but also in Italy, the South of France, Paris and Spain). Jan was a very broadly oriented artist [etcher, graphic designer, watercolorist, illustrator, sculptor, lithographer, monumental artist, painter, (wood) engraver, draftsman, teacher and ceramist with an emphasis on portraits, Christian religious and figure representations, landscapes and cityscapes.
