The paintings of Jelle de Vries are landscape in character but not in the traditional sense of a landscape that is arranged by human hands. What he paints are landscapes in the making, land that has yet to be created and is constantly changing in shape and structure. And you see that on the border between land and water along the coast and in particular at our Wadden Sea. In his work you will rarely find a horizon that is so characteristic of the coast but another line, namely the high-water line and the coastline. He is inspired by what he sees in the vertical plane. Another characteristic of his work is the thick structure, created by a thick paste containing, among other things, mud from the Wadden Sea or sand/shells, etc.
