Self-portrait of Jean Adams (priest painter 1899-1970) Signed Date 1931 Johann Hubert (Jean) Adams (Rheydt, 3 February 1899 - Weert, 27 November 1970) was a German-Dutch painter and sculptor. Life and work Adams was born in Germany, but grew up in Beegden, where his father was a farmer. In 1923 he was ordained a priest by Bishop Laurentius Schrijnen. He then became a drawing teacher at Rolduc. He studied at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam and in 1927 obtained the MO drawing certificate at the Rijksinstituut voor tekenleraren. In 1935 Adams left Rolduc and became a chaplain in Ospel. He was then a pastor in Nunhem (1939) and from 1952 in Ell. In 1953 he was released from his church duties to devote himself entirely to art. In 1956 he received the Cultural Prize of the province of Limburg. He was co-founder of the council for art of the ministry of education and science. Adams was appointed knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau. He died at the age of 71 in the Sint Jansziekenhuis in Weert.
