Jan Baartmans (1898-1968) werd geboren in Bergen op Zoom maar bracht een groot deel van zijn leven door in Frankrijk. In Frankrijk ontdekte hij de kleuren en het licht en ontwikkelde hij zich tot een virtuoos colorist. Hij was schilder en tekenaar. Zijn onderwerpen waren Brabantse, Zeeuwse en Franse landschappen, stads- en havengezichten en de boerenbevolking in verschillende stijlen. (expressionisme en impressionisme). Hij was lid van de Amsterdamse kunstenaarsvereniging “De Onafhankelijken”. Zijn werk is o.a. vertegenwoordigd in het museum Markiezenhof te Bergen op Zoom.
