Hans Claesen - Tilburg Trophy (for judoka Irene de Kok) - Sold

Sculptor Hans Claesen made this trophy on behalf of the Municipality of Tilburg.
Judoka Irene de Kok received this copy on the occasion of her election as Sportswoman of the Year in 1987. De Kok became world champion twice and European and Dutch Champion several times. She won silver at the 1992 Olympics.
Claesen studied at the predecessor of the Academy for Visual Education and then attended the art academies in Den Bosch, The Hague and Maastricht.
There is no artist who left so many works in the public space of Tilburg. Of the still existing ones, these are Door frame at Spoorlaan 346 (1956), Sint Cosmas and Sint Damianus at the main entrance of the Sint Elisabeth Hospital (Carré; 1956), Door frame at Ringbaan-West 247 (1957), Three children in a circle at the Postelse Hoeflaan (1962), Naked boy with fish on the Westermarkt (1964), Fish at the former swimming pool on the Friezenlaan (now at the Stappegoor swimming pool; 1964), Relief wall in the Scarlattistraat (1967), Balustrade manifestation balcony of city office 1 on the Willemsplein (1971) and Collaboration on Padua Square (1978). In 1960 he provided some interior pieces for the Pastor of Arskerk.
Claesen was one of the founders of the Duvelhok in 1969. In 1954 he made the nativity scene for De Heuvel and in 1970 he designed the Tilburg Trophy. In the 1980s Claesen was also involved in the restoration of the Norbertijnenpoort.
Irene de Kok, multiple Dutch, European and World Champion, donated this cup, together with a large number of others, to the thrift store and was therefore legally acquired by the seller.
