After studying economics at the University of Groningen, which he graduated with honours in 1970, he initially worked in Groningen, and later for several years at the Ministry of Culture, Recreation and Social Work. In 1978 he went to study at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, which he left with a diploma in 1983. Initially he made many paintings and graphics, but later he became more involved with drawings, often heads or nudes in colour, and photography, in which he made extensive use of distortions.
In the meantime, he was and is also involved in economics, especially the economics of art. From 1990 to 2005, he taught at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, where he received his doctorate in 2002. From September 2005 to August 2008, Abbing was a special professor in the sociology of art at the University of Amsterdam, where he held the Boekman chair.
