Frederik Amalius van Oostveen was born on September 13, 1885 in Amsterdam.
He lived and worked in Amsterdam, London, Paris, Hoorn, Rotterdam and Heemstede and died in 1979 in Bennebroek.
Van Oostveen was a pupil at the School of Applied Arts in Amsterdam. He then studied for seven years at the National Academy under the guidance of August Allebé, Antoon Derkinderen and Nicolaas van de Waay.
Van Oostveen is best known for his Rotterdam harbour views, but when he later moved to Heemstede, the bulb fields behind the dunes became his favourite subject. The Historical Museum in Deventer has such a flower bulb field in its collection.
The artist lived in Amsterdam until 1917 and also visited Paris and London.
After his marriage to the painter Hermine Sluiter, in 1918, he moved to Hoorn. After 1920 he spent 45 years of his life in Rotterdam and then lived and worked in Heemstede for 14 years.
