Dirk Berend Nanninga (born in Arnhem, died in Amsterdam) made it quite far in the art world as an autodidact. At the beginning of his artistic career he painted in a style that showed affinities with the Hague School, later his work became more detailed and he tried to depict reality without frills. Nanninga was a board member of De Onafhankelijken for a while, an Amsterdam artists' association that opposed the prevailing art views and put the artistic freedom of its members first. The Ameland museums have detailed etchings of the tower in Hollum and a village view by Nes in their collection. His wife was born on Ameland.
