After high school, Engels studied Italian in Utrecht. As a visual artist, she is self-taught.

In 1965, Engels worked on television programs about Ancient Egypt and in particular Pharaoh Tutankhamun, but she also presented the music program Fanclub. During the period 1984 to 1999, she exhibited at home and abroad. In 1992, she won the Movado Museum Prize. Since 2000, she has shown her latest work exclusively via her website and Engels has opened her own studio in Huizen for viewing and/or assignments. Engels was a candidate for the European Parliament elections of 22 May 2014 on behalf of 50Plus.
