Albert Raty was born in Bouillon in 1889 and grew up in a family that ran a successful tannery. He developed a passion for art at a young age, studied painting and drawing at prestigious institutes in Belgium and Paris, and was influenced by famous artists such as Cezanne. After the First World War, he returned to the Ardennes and was mentored by painter Richard Heintz. Raty made a name for himself with his paintings of Ardennes landscapes and portraits, characterised by powerful brushstrokes. He survived setbacks such as the Second World War and enjoyed his greatest successes in the 1950s. Albert Raty died in 1970 at the age of 80, and his works are praised for their power and simplicity.
