Plateel

Plateel is the collective name for pottery (ceramics) that is painted by a pottery painter after firing and then fired again. Industrial techniques were mainly used to make the shapes, by means of casting clay and moulds. After this, however, these were decorated by traditional techniques such as painting or processing these shapes by hand. At least in the early 20th century, the Netherlands had a number of prominent pottery bakeries (pottery factories) with highly skilled pottery painters. Although "pottery" is still made according to the same techniques, we limit ourselves here to the factories and pottery painters who were working in the heyday of pottery, from 1880-1935.
