Within expressionism, artists use different techniques to express their feelings and leave their own mark on the world. This can be done through the use of colours, distortion of images and perspective. Expressionism is therefore opposed to impressionism, which revolves around expressing reality. Within expressionism, the link with reality regularly disappears. This idea of art was so revolutionary that expressionism was seen as modern art in general. Two important groups within expressionsime were Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter.
