The style

In 1917 the magazine for visual arts De Stijl was founded in Leiden. According to the artists of De Stijl, a new era had dawned after the First World War, namely a time of balance between individual and universal values. Their aim was a total integration of art and life. De Stijl can be found everywhere, both in clothing and packaging. The works of De Stijl are limited to the elementary things. Only the primary colors were allowed to be used, and the three non-colors (grey, black and white), and all lines and corners had to be straight. Yet all works are different and do not resemble each other, this means that the art is not simple. In this way the artists tried to give shape to modernization. De Stijl became very influential internationally.
