Wynton MARSALIS (New Orleans 1961)


Wynton Marsalis is an influential American trumpeter, composer and bandleader, born October 18, 1961 in New Orleans. He is known for his exceptional technique and contributions to the jazz revival. Member of a musical family, Marsalis started playing the trumpet at an early age and quickly became an emerging talent in the jazz scene.

His career spans an impressive array of achievements and recognitions. In 1983, he became the first artist to simultaneously win Grammy Awards in the Jazz and Classical Music categories. As the leader of the Wynton Marsalis Quintet and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, he has released many albums covering a wide range of jazz styles from bebop to swing and modern compositions.

Marsalis has been committed to preserving the jazz tradition and promoting it to younger generations. He has established educational programs and is a staunch advocate of jazz education. His dedication to musical excellence and cultural awareness has earned him numerous awards, including the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for Music for his work "Blood on the Fields".

As a visionary and ambassador of jazz, Wynton Marsalis has pushed the boundaries of the genre and has promoted jazz music around the world. His technical virtuosity, compositional talent and dedication to musical education have made him an iconic figure whose impact will last for generations to come.
