Theo MACKAAY (Utrecht 1950)
Painter, Sculptor, Musician
Theo Mackaay was educated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and later at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, where he attended the monumental classes.
Mackaay's work is characterized by classical archetypes, often of animals, warriors or women, which he transforms into deformed figures, which therefore transcend realistic forms. Incidentally, this does not mean that he did not create realistic conventional images.
His most famous statue is perhaps the Golden Calf. This film prize was designed by him and has been one of the most famous sculptures in the Netherlands for decades, as it is awarded every year.
His classical training remains clearly visible in the work of Theo Mackaay. Work that is also becoming increasingly monumental at the moment. He has large works in various cities in Europe. Theo works from his studios successively in the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium and Spain.
Theo Mackaay's work is in many corporate and private collections.
