Michael GRAVES
Architect, Designer
Born in Indianapolis (United States) in 1934
Education:
Michael Graves studied Architecture and Design at the University of Cincinnati (United States) and then did Graduate School at Harvard at Boston University in Cambridge (United States).
He lived and worked in the United States.
In the 1960s, Michael Graves, along with Meier, Gwathmey, Hejduk and Eisenman, belonged to The New York Five, a group of modernist architects. Michael Graves is known for the household items he designed for the American chain Target. He also designed many products for the Italian household brand Alessi, including a well-known tea set. Michael Graves also designed villas, university buildings and museums.
In his work Michael Graves shows a shift from modern to postmodern. Initially, Graves oriented himself to the early works of Le Corbusier, (see New York Five), but as time went on, Le Corbusier's influence diminished. Graves' architecture took on the character of spatial sculptures, you could say a late elaboration of Cubism.
Michael Graves started using more and more color in his walls. His work showed that he had turned his back on pure modernism, for example by using more and more classical details, such as keystones and the use of rustication. His new visual language combines historical motifs with the language of the modernists.
