Jo Spier (Zutphen, June 26, 1900 - Santa Fe, May 21, 1978) was a Dutch illustrator and binding designer who later emigrated to the United States. He was of Jewish descent. Joseph Eduard Adolf Spier illustrated for the daily newspaper De Telegraaf between 1924 and 1939. He also drew various advertisements for KLM and Peijnenburg, among others. Several of his books have also been published. Spier was the only son of Isedore Spier and Seline Elias. In 1925 he married Albertine Sophie 'Tineke' van Raalte (Dordrecht, 9 January 1907 - Plandome, New York) and had three children with her: Tom, C_line and Peter Spier. Because of Spier's Jewish background he stayed during the Second World War in various concentration camps. At the beginning of the war he spent some time in Westerbork, as punishment for a cartoon he made of Hitler in 1939. Then in March and April he and his family (who has been there since February) were in Villa Bouchina, a reservation camp for 'protected' Jews by the occupying forces. From April 21, 1943 until the end of the war, the illustrator was imprisoned in Theresienstadt. There he performed some actions that his fellow inmates did not appreciate. For example, he actively participated in the German propaganda film Theresienstadt: Ein Dokumentarfilm aus dem j_dischen Siedlungsgebiet, and on several occasions he gave fierce speeches to his camp mates, according to himself under pressure from the camp leadership. He also made paintings on the walls in the hospital.Source ; rkd , wikipedia
