Jan de BEUS
Painter
Born in Muiderberg in 1958
Education:
Jan de Beus was educated at the Applied Arts School of the State Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam.
He lives and works in Amsterdam
Jan de Beus has never been disturbed by the prevailing trends, he has developed from 1975 as an expressionist pur sang. To him, painting means dreaming out loud; He does this with bright, moving strokes in dark colors in which a red or golden glow sometimes appears. His dreams are about landscapes, haunted castles and knights from bygone times, about lonely figures who are swallowed by the city or nature. Jan de Beus very consciously searches for the limits of recognisability. At first glance, he seems to be moving into total abstraction. But on closer observation, clearly recognizable shapes emerge from the maze of aggressive strokes and underlying dark colors. The atmosphere of the canvases is often ominous. The thickly applied, sand-mixed paint warns us against touch, while at the same time inviting us to it. The paintings are romantic and often melancholy.
De Beus himself calls his works figurative matter paintings. The choice of his subjects are related to those of classical painting; crucifixions, biblical scenes and canvases by the great masters are his source of inspiration. He wants to measure himself against art history, to leave a mark of his existence. Jan de Beus is an artist in whom time passes, just as a monk, driven by his love for God, devotes himself to copying the Holy Scriptures, so de Beus devotes his existence in devotion to painting.
