Gispen (1916)

Gispen (1916)

In 1916 Willem Hendrik Gispen took over an art forge from Rotterdam, which he named Kunstsmederij WH Gispen & Co. Gispen tried to take into account parts previously made in the factory in new designs, so that existing production processes could be reused. Gispen mainly saw potential in designing and selling series. In the 1920s, lamps were first marketed in collaboration with designers from his circle of friends. In terms of attitude and style, the factory was inspired by Ruskin, Morris, functionalism, rationalism and constructivism. Nowadays Gispen mainly focuses on the production of furniture for public spaces and buildings, so that designs will be recognizable for many people. Well-known designs are the GISO lamps, various chairs such as the 405, 201 and 412, but also the interior of Huis Sonneveld in Rotterdam. The Gispen Collection Foundation was established in 1996 to manage, conserve and expand the collection.
