The works of art of Astrid Engels (1941) arise from her fascination with and enormous knowledge of ancient peoples and cultures.
Engels makes masterful use of old sources of inspiration to bridge the gap between past and present, between reality and fantasy.
By using self-developed techniques, her paintings have something fresco-like, making them seem as if they come straight from antiquity. In addition to her paintings, she started producing stone lithographs a few years ago in collaboration with master printer Gert Jan Forrer.
In 1992 she received the Movado Museum Prize. In May 2009 Astrid Engels was awarded the title of Knight in the Order of Orange Nassau.
